June walks among tables full of students enjoying their meal. She's chewing a bite of food and wiping the inside of her bowl with a piece of bread. She approaches the table where Mally is sitting next to Adam and asks, "Hey Mally, when you can, will you ask Ine for his soup recipe?" Mally turns away from her plate of food, still holding a fork, and says, "Mmmm? Why don't you ask him?" June glances away and gestures to the side saying, "Well, I'm keeping an eye on the food table, and I need to make sure there's plenty of..." She glances back at Mally, who is now smiling coyly at her while resting her chin on her hand. June looks confused and says, "...What?"

Back to using silhouettes for the background characters, which is useful for drawing larger groups. I prefer using a dark, desaturated purple instead of black or gray for them. I also add a bit of variation by adding another layer on top, turning the opacity fairly low, and switching the blending mode to multiply. Then I add a secondary color to each character: red, blue, green, orange, etc. It’s just enough to make each character stand out a bit from the others, while making them still feel like they’re part of the same group.
By the way, Luchette and Dil are in this scene. Do you see them? If I’m being honest though, I wonder if I should have had Luchette still in her chair instead of sitting on the bench. It’s, of course, possible that she could have lifted herself onto the bench, possibly with help from some of those nearby. But it’s something I should do more research on. Fortunately, with them being in the background, it’s not as noticeable, and with them being silhouettes, if it’s wildly inaccurate, I always have the plausible deniability of saying that it’s not actually them, but some other background characters of similar species. 😅 Still, accurately representing people from different groups (such as those who use a wheelchair, as in this example) is important to me, as I think it should be for any writer.

Mally knows what’s up. She’s a hummingbird after all.
