June enters the hallway carrying a box of medical supplies as Mally whirls around to face her and yells, "June!! What the carp is a half-naked boy doing in our living room?!" June's eyes narrow and she says, "He's not half-naked…" Mally glares back at her and puts her wings on her hips and says, "His top half is naked!!" June enters the front room while shaking an orange colored pouch as Mally peeks from around the corner. June glances back at Mally and says, "Be nice, okay? He got locked out. I'm just making sure he doesn't freeze." Ine speaks up and says, "Oh, I'm fine, really. I just need…" June lifts up his arm, still holding the orange pouch. Ine looks at the pouch and says, "Um, what's that…?" June replies, "Heat pad. Hold this here."

Okay I’ll admit, the dialog was fun to write for this page. 😂 The facial expressions were also fun. I’ve come to learn that the writing of a comic is the most important aspect. Comics may be a visual medium, but a comic with poor art but a compelling story will beat a comic with great art and a mediocre story at least nine times out of ten. That’s why I started paying much more attention to my comic writing process.
When it comes to the visual aspects of a comic, the most important thing is to make it easy to read. That includes things I’ve talked about before like panel and word balloon placement, as well as things you’d expect like font size, spelling, and legibility. But it’s also important to be able to read the characters by their facial expressions, gestures, and pose. When in doubt, don’t be afraid to crank the expressions up higher than you think they need, especially in a particularly humorous or dramatic scene! The human eye is trained to recognize subtle differences in human expressions. In cartoons however, it really helps to exaggerate!! Don’t be afraid to go just a little bit crazy!
