Breaking the Fast 7

Transcript

Several students walk into the clubhouse including a horse wearing a collared shirt and a walrus with blue hair with his arm around the shoulder of a golden doodle. Meanwhile, June continues arranging cookies on the food table. Ine approaches from the side carrying a large pot and says, "Hi June, where can I put this?" June glances up and says, "Oh, Hey Ine. I didn't know you brought something." Ine smiles awkwardly and says, "It was kinda last minute. Partly to thank you for rescuing me this morning." June blushes and glances away, saying, "Oh. Well, you're welcome. We'll never say no to more food." Ine opens the lid and says, "Great! It's hearty cricket mealworm stew! Hope you like it!" Steam wafts from the open pot and June breaks out in a cold sweat and stammers, "O-oh! That's... I'm sure it's, um..."

Behind the Scenes

I’ll admit it’s sometimes difficult to decide between using simple silhouettes to give the impression of background characters, and actually drawing and coloring those characters, especially when those characters may not get much screen time otherwise. It just felt right to go ahead and fully render the secondary characters in this page. I’d used silhouettes on several other pages in the chapter, so it seemed like a good balance to draw and color them this time. But that raises another question: who should they be?

Using cameos of characters belonging to or representing friends, family, or even patrons is always a fun option, as is simply flexing your creative muscles and coming up with a brand new character on the fly. I’ll let you in on a secret: one of the secondary characters on this page is an OC I’ve used elsewhere, but not in this comic. And one of them is a character I plan to use later in Aww, Feathers! Which one? You’ll have to keep reading to find out! 😉

By the way, while it makes sense that entomophagy (the practice of eating insects) is common in the world of Aww, Feathers!, it’s also a thing in our own world, and becoming more and more common. It may seem strange, but many insects are considered a healthy and sustainable source of protein that can be incorporated into human diet. It may not be long before we ladle up our own bowls of “hearty cricket mealworm stew”! 😋
