Breaking the Fast 5

Transcript

Mally walks into the Apple Orchard clubhouse with Adam, a tall, burly grizzly bear. They each have an arm around the other and Adam is glancing up at the doorframe covered in tinsel which barely grazes his head. Mally looks at him and says, "Checking for mistletoe, Amor?" to which Adam chuckles and replies, "Yeah, like we need it." Mally spots June who is organizing the wrapped cookie plates on a table. She calls out, "Oh, Juney! Adam, C'mere! This is my roommate, June!" Adam shakes June's hand while Mally stands behind them and smiles. June says, "Good to finally meet you." Adam says, "Same. Mally says you're her best roommate ever." Adam leans forward and whispers to June while smirking back at Mally, "No offense, but you may have some tough competition soon." Mally smiles and blushes while June laughs.

Behind the Scenes

Phew, I stayed up way too late getting this page finished and uploaded! Actually, the page was already done, I just needed to upload it, but I wanted to finish uploading the rest of the chapter’s pages at the same time, which meant I needed to finish shading a couple of them, which meant… well, it ballooned a bit out of control and I ended up not getting to bed until around 3am! 😵 (I have such a patient wife! 😅) Still ironing out the wrinkles of my comic process. But that’s okay. As long as I’m making progress.

Anyways, here’s another instance of using a pre-made asset and drawing over the top of it to make it feel less artificial: the tinsel around the door and along the walls. That’s actually a brush shape in Clip Studio, and a very simple one at that. I don’t think it would look great as is in the complete scene, even colored. However, after drawing it where I wanted the tinsel to be, I used it as a guide and drew around it. It only took a couple extra minutes, but the end result works quite well.

Speaking of the tinsel, this was yet another one of those details I added almost last minute to remind readers (and myself!) in what time of year this chapter is taking place. Christmas is right around the corner!
